Next Steps for New Muslims
You’ve likely found yourself on this website because you’re either 1.) learning about Islam, 2.) thinking about becoming - or getting ready to become! - Muslim, or 3.) looking to get (re)connected and (re)acquainted with the Muslim community. Good news? You’re in the right place!
1. Learning
Some of the best things to do in the learning phase is to dig in - here are a few hot takes we have to share:
What to read: We recommend The Clear Quran for a clear English translation, “Muhammad: A Very Short Introduction” by Dr. Jonathan AC Brown to learn about Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his life, “Being Muslim” by Asad Tarsin, for a step-by-step manual on what Muslims believe and what practicing Islam entails and “Islam and the Cultural Imperative” by Dr. Umar F Abdullah to get a sense of how Islam might integrate with your culture.
What to do: Read the FAQs on our website and pick a Center DC event to attend! If you’re feeling nervous, you can always start with a Convert Support Group gathering - which meets in-person every 2nd Saturday from 4-6pm. Spend time around other Muslims and seeing what community feels like are great ways to start imagining what it might be like for you.
Who to talk to: Got questions? Need more tailored next steps? Want someone to talk things out with? You can schedule an appointment to meet with one of our chaplains and they can help you with the figuring out bit, including referring you to a scholar should your questions be of the more technical nature.
2. Taking Shahadah
So….What’s holding you back?! If the answer is ‘nothing’ - congratulations! You’re ready to take Shahadah - the process of formally embracing Islam and officially becoming a Muslim! To embark on this new path and start your life long journey of practicing Islam, all you have to do is utter the following statement out loud, with sincerity and intention: “I bear witness that there is no god worthy of worship except Allah and that Prophet Muhammad is His last and final messenger” - usually, this is done in the presence of other Muslims to witness and celebrate with you. If you’re interested in taking Shahadah at Center DC, simply email us - we can help you schedule a time that fits your comfort level and includes the important people in your life who you’d like to have present. We’re also thrilled to offer a New Muslim welcome kit with books, gear, swag, - and a certificate! - to help start you off right on your path!
3. Getting Connected
Once you’ve taken the plunge - now comes the work of integrating your new beliefs and practices into your already-full life! We recommend getting connected with other Muslims and building yourself a network of support.
